Bengal has spawned generations of world class artists and painters. It has a distinct indigenous heritage of arts and paints. Abanindranath Tagore shepherded the modern art movement that manifested historical, spiritual and artistic Indian traditions. Rabindranath Tagore himself was a celebrated painter and the first Indian to display the paintings outside India in Europe. Jamini Ray with his own unique style of painting the folklore and tribal life of Bengal by sweeping brush strokes had immensely contributed to the modern art of Bengal and India. Ganesh Pyne enthralled the art lovers with his paintings encapsulating dark imagery, surrealism, and fantasy. Nandalal Bose, Ramkinkar Baij, Bikash Bhattacharjee, Upendrakishore Roy Chowdhury and Somnath Hore demonstrated the dexterity of their artistic works through their pristine sketches and sculptures. The artwork of Satyajit Ray was also a class of its own. He experimented with Bengali graphemes and designed the cover of his own books and cine posters of some of his own films. The curves and lines, characters and figures carved by Jogen Chowdhury, the famous Bengali painter herald a milieu of expressive human sensuality and testifies the exposition of contemporary Bengali art and paintings.
